    In many cases the usage w. the ptc. serves to emphasize the duration of an action or condition (BGU 183, 25 ἐφʼ ὸ̔ν χρόνον ζῶσα ᾖ Σαταβούς); JosAs 2:1 ἦν … ἐξουθενοῦσα καὶ καταπτύουσα πάντα ἄνδρα). ἦν διδάσκων he customarily taught Mk 1:22; Lk 4:31; 19:47. ἦν θέλων he cherished the wish 23:8. ἦσαν νηστεύοντες they were keeping the fast Mk 2:18. ἦσαν συλλαλοῦντες they were conversing for a while 9:4. ἦν προσδεχόμενος he was waiting for (the kgdm.) 15:43. ἦν συγκύπτουσα she was bent over Lk 13:11.

    2. to tell — говорить, сказать, сообщить, приказать: to tell smb smth — сказать кому-либо что-либо/сообщить кому-либо что-либо; to tell smb how to do smth — рассказать кому-либо, как что-либо делать; to tell smth in one's own words — рассказать что-либо своими словами; to tell smb about smb, smth — рассказать кому-либо о ком-либо, о чем-либо; to tell smb to do smth — приказывать кому-либо что-либо сделать/велеть кому-либо что-либо сделать Do as you are told./Do what you are told. — Делай так, как тебе говорят./Делай так, как тебе велят.     3. to talk — говорить, разговаривать, беседовать, обсуждать, поговорить: to talk much (little) — много (мало) разговаривать/много (мало) говорить; to talk about/of smb, smth — разговаривать о ком-либо, о чем-либо/ говорить о ком-либо, о чем-либо; to talk of doing smth — говорить о том, чтобы что-либо сделать; to talk on a subject — разговаривать на какую-либо тему; to talk nonsense — говорить ерунду/пороть чушь; to talk smb's head off — заговорить кого-либо; to talk oneself hoarse — договориться до хрипоты; to talk over the phone — говорить по телефону The matter must be talked about. — Этот вопрос надо обговорить/обсудить. The child murmured something in the sleep. — Ребенок что-то бормотал во сне.     5. to mutter — говорить, бурчать, бормотать, пробурчать, ворчать (быстро сказать что-либо, особенно в раздражении): to mutter something to oneself— проворчать что-то себе под иос «Why do I have to do all the work?", she muttered irritably. — «Почему я должна делать всю работу?», проворчала она раздраженно.     6. to mumble — мямлить, бормотать, невнятно произносить, запинаться ( невнятно произносить слова): to mumble a prayer — бормотать молитву; to mumble to oneself — бормотать про себя; to mumble one's words — невнятно произносить/бормотать себе под нос; to mumble through one's answer — ответить запинаясь She keeps mumbling something about his pension, but I can't understand what she is saying. — Она продолжает мямлить о его пенсии, но я не понимаю, о чем она говорит. Bill was late into the meeting and sat down mumbling an excuse. — Билл опоздал на собрание, сел и промямлил какое-то извинение. Don't mumble, speak up. — He тяни резину, говори прямо.     7. to whisper — говорить, говорить шепотом, шептать ( говорить что-либо очень тихим голосом): «Don't wake the baby» whispered Ann. — «He разбуди ребенка», прошептала Аня.     8. to growl — говорить, ворчать, рычать, урчать, бурчать, буркнуть (говорить тихим злым голосом, особенно для того, чтобы напугать коголибо): «Come over here and say that» he growled. — «Подойди сюда и попробуй сказать это еще раз», пробурчал он. Не walked into the house, growled a few words to my mother and then went upstairs to bed. — Он вошел в дом, прорычал что-то моей матери и пошел наверх спать. Thunder was growling in the distance. — Вдали слышались глухие раскаты грома. The dog growled at me. — Собака зарычала на меня.
    9. to snarl — говорить, говорить злым голосом, огрызаться ( чтобы заставить почувствовать угрозу): «Keep your dirty hands off me» she snarled. — «Убери свои грязные руки», огрызнулась она. Every time he asked her a question she snarled a bad-tempered answer. — Каждый раз, когда он задавал ей вопрос, она отвечала огрызаясь.
    10. to grunt — хрюкать, крякать, ворчать, бурчать, бормотать (сказать несколько аюв грубым, тихим голосом, особенно если вам не интересно то, что вам говорят): to grunt (out) an answer — проворчать ответ Не grunted as he picked up the sack. — Он крякнул, поднимая рюкзак.     11. to stammer — заикаться, запинаться, говорить заикаясь, страдать заиканием, произносить с запинкой, бормотать (испытывать трудности в произношении слов запинаться, заикаться, что может быть вызвано возбуждением, нервозностью и т. д.): to stammer from excitement — заикаться от волнения; to slammer badly сильно заикаться; to slammer over a word — запнуться на каком-либо слове Не stammered apologies (explanations). — Он пробормотан извинения (объяснения). Lena, flashing with embarrassment, began to stammer. — Лена, красная от смущения, начала заикаться. The boy managed to stammer out a description of his attacker. — Мальчик, заикаясь, сумел описать человека, напавшего на него.
    12. to stutter — заикаться, говорить заикаясь, запинаться, говорить неуверенно (повторять один и тот же звук, что может быть вызвано нервозностью или возбуждением): to stutter (out) an apology — запинаясь пробормотать извинение Henry stuttered a reply and sat down, his face red. — Генри заикаясь ответил и сел, покраснев. Не stuttered out an apologies. — Он заикаясь бормотал извинения.
